Forum: classic_tv Subject: Are there any shows from the 80's that are in public domain?

The other site I belong to someone had started a thread about lost shows from the 1980's like Small Wonder, She's The Sheriff, Thicke of the Night, Headline Chasers, etc..

Anyway that topic had me wondering if there wer any shows from the 80's that are in public domain? I would imagine that number is small if even that. However on the other hand a friend of mine did tell me recently that he had read that the Jim Bakker PTL Club may end up in public domain if the master tapes aren't sold soon then again even if the PTL Club did end up in PD who would want to watch? Well Tammy Faye did end up having a following in her later years so perhpas there could be some interest there.

I do wonder if Morton Downey Jr's infamous talk show is in PD since Mort passed away several years ago and I don't think there is an estate left. What about that Tina Louise soap "The Rituals" or that syndicated dance show "We're Dancin", I think that was the show that first gave us Boy George & Culture Club.

For a United States 80's show to be PD, it would have to of aired without a copyright notice. Which is actually probably not that unlikely, at least as far as local TV/early cable is concerned. I for one would be interesting in seeing a couple "PTL Club" episodes if they ever become PD, if only to examine the set design and stuff.

I would imagine at least some of the early cable shows, there could be a chance they may have been aired without being copyrighted but the odds would be better( being in PD ) with those local cable productions. My hometown first got cable TV in 1966 and for some reason I have my doubts any of that local stuff they aired such as religious, public affairs, news, talk, high school sports were copyrighted.

But then again there could still be a risk as far as uploading such stuff on the net, even on sites like this one. For example Maury Povich appeared as a guest on our local "Library Data Line" program back in the 70s. of course Maury Povich todayis a household name would his people go after the uploading of that clip?

Sort of like the uploading of old radio airchecks. When I worked in radio I was once told that ANYTHING the local disc jockey would do on the air right off the bat falls into public domain of course that dosen't include the commercials, national news ( EX: CBS News ) and more than 5 seconds of the record that was played. However the risk is..well perhaps that shock rock & roll jock playing KISS or AC/DC and talking about hanging around strip clubs back in 1980 could very well be a Baptist preacher today and may not want people to check out on the net what he did for a living some years back.
